Senior Embedded Software Engineer- Hardware
About this role
Team description SumUp's Hardware Development team builds the physical products millions of small businesses rely on every day, and this role sits right at the start of a new chapter: moving our in-house hardware onto the Android platform for the first time. This isn't a typical Android device, it's a highly customised, security-first product built from scratch, which means the person joining will help define how the operating system, drivers, and secure processor come together rather than inheriting someone else's setup.
The team works closely with hardware, software, and QA engineers across the bring-up process, so this role offers a rare chance to shape a product's foundations while working alongside experienced embedded and secure processor leads. What you'll do Support system bring-up for the new Android embedded platform, from bootloader through to kernel and framework Integrate and maintain kernel modules and drivers, including power management and connectivity components Contribute to build system integration across the platform Debug hardware and software issues at the protocol level and help resolve critical issues found during testing Carry out testing and validation to confirm the platform is stable and secure before release You'll be great for this role if… Experience developing embedded systems with a strong focus on Android OS, gained over several years in a professional setting Strong knowledge of the Android OS architecture, from bootloader (U-Boot, Little Kernel) and kernel through to framework and services Hands-on experience debugging hardware interfaces at protocol level, including I2C, SPI, UART, and SDIO Solid understanding of embedded security concepts such as Secure Boot, TrustZone (TEE), dm-verity, encryption, and hardware-backed key storage Comfort working with Qualcomm Snapdragon or MediaTek platforms, and expert-level C programming for embedded Linux environments Why you should join SumUp 🌎 Opportunity to work with SumUppers globally on large-scale fintech products used by millions of businesses worldwide, from our Berlin office.
