Principal Machine Learning Engineer, Driving Product
About this role
Before the detail, here's the challenge you'd help us solve. We build the embodied intelligence that moves real vehicles safely, and the ecosystem a billion machines will run on in the future. Very few people in AI can say this. Every role here, whatever the team, plugs into that. Here’s what this particular role covers. 🛠️ About our Driving Product Team The Driving Product team owns Wayve's core end to end driving model, the algorithm that directly shapes how our vehicles behave on the road.
This model already underpins production agreements with Nissan and Mercedes, with further OEM partnerships in the works, so the team's output is tied directly to Wayve's near term commercial milestones. The team is highly iterative: it looks at the top issues we see on the road, root causes them, and drives them out through data, model and evaluation changes, working closely with other teams across the business to resolve issues that span the model and vehicle interface.
🧠 Your day-to-day Lead the team iterating on L2 driving performance, balancing hands-on technical work with team leadership Diagnose the highest impact issues seen on the road, root cause them, and resolve them through data and model iteration Own changes to data recipes, model architecture, evaluation and release readiness for the driving model Partner with other teams to resolve cross-functional issues, including model and vehicle interface problems Act as one of the team's key hands-on developers, writing code and running experiments alongside directing the team's priorities 🧩 What you'll be working on: The end to end driving model that powers Wayve's L2 product and sits at the centre of our OEM partnerships with Nissan and Mercedes, with further partners in the pipeline Scaling the driving model's performance across different geographies and vehicle platforms while hitting performance and compliance KPIs Data led iteration cycles: using on road and off road evaluation to identify the biggest performance gaps and close them Cross-functional resolution of model and vehicle interface issues, working with specialists across the business Growing and shaping a small, high impact team (initially up to five people) as the driving model programme scales 👤 You should apply if: You're highly technical and hands-on, comfortable writing Python and doing model and data iteration yourself, not just directing others You've delivered deployed, production ML models, ideally in robotics or autonomous vehicles, with experience shipping and iterating on ML for embodied AI applications Alternatively, you've productionised ML models at another company and have experience delivering incremental improvements to a live system over time Your experience is production focused rather than primarily research or early stage exploration You want to keep doing deeply technical work, whether or not you've managed people before.
