Purpose of the Position The Photonics R&D Scientist is responsible for inventing new photonic devices and systems. This position directs and coordinates R&D activities involved in invention, fabrication, testing, and application, products and systems.
Although the location of the position is in Goleta, CA, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other Thorlabs locations or present work at photonics academic research conferences. Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to: Leverage external academic literature and internal R&D know-how to invent new complex photonic devices and systems which span expertise across mechanical, electrical, and optical domains and integrate active or passive photonic devices.
Research and influence internal and external customer photonic design proposals to determine photonic device R/D research company goals. Publish or patent innovative research and present findings at academic conferences. Directs and coordinates photonic research activities across multiple disciplines and departments to meet company goals. Prepares project reports by collecting, analyzing and summarizing measurement data of photonic devices.
Create new R&D initiatives to expand the business. Responsible for engineering team accomplishments by reviewing open issues and action items; coordinating actions; contributing information and analysis to team meetings and reports. Mentoring of peers, technicians, and new hires across multiple disciplines. Photonics expertise. Lead multidisciplinary teams in complicated photonic R&D multi-year initiatives. Provide R&D project status reports and present to executive staff to influence company goals.
