Engineering Manager – Strategic Fleet Planning (m/f/d)
About this role
SIXT is a global mobility leader, and Fleet is where the company makes its highest-stakes bets. Every year we decide how to deploy massive investments into buying, positioning, and retiring vehicles across every market we operate in. Strategic Fleet Planning is the software behind those calls. It turns historic and predictive data into a plan for the fleet we'll need next quarter, next year, and beyond — one of the most consequential decision-support systems in the company, built end-to-end in Portugal on AWS.
The team behind it isn't new to raising the bar: it's already deep into agentic engineering and closing the gap between backend and frontend, and it's not done yet. Beyond Strategic Fleet Planning, this team also picks up other high-impact engineering work across SIXT's tech portfolio as priorities shift — we want engineers energized by range, not boxed into one slice of the stack. You'll sit inside SIXT's Revenue Management organization, working daily alongside Product, Data Science, and fellow engineering teams building what moves us forward.
We're looking for an Engineering Manager who leads from the front: hands-on with code and with agents, fluent with engineers and with the business, and ready to push an already-strong team further. YOUR ROLE AT SIXT You own delivery of Strategic Fleet Planning end-to-end: partner with Product, Data Science, and Business stakeholders to turn fleet strategy into shipped software that changes how SIXT buys and deploys vehicles You lead and grow a colocated engineering team in Portugal, pushing their agentic and full-stack practice forward — you coach where each engineer sits on the technical and AI-maturity curve, empower them to own technical decisions (engineering manager != tech lead), and hold the team to outcomes, not ticket count or how much code an agent produced You pick up a rotating portfolio of other high-impact engineering work across SIXT's tech stack as priorities shift.
You help decide what's next; you don't wait to be told You work with peer EMs, not in a silo: partner on shared projects and own cross-cutting initiatives — AI adoption, security — as a group, not a solo assignment You operate as a real product partner: challenge low-value asks, co-own the backlog, and know the business impact of the last three things your team shipped You deliver even when roadmaps shift under you — you never hide behind the line between IT and the business YOUR SKILLS MATTER Experience You have a proven track record of building, leading, and growing software engineering teams — ideally shipping decision-support, planning, or optimization systems beyond standard CRUD applications Technical Background You bring hands-on production experience in Java or Golang on AWS, are comfortable with Postgres and event-driven systems like Kafka, and can navigate legacy PHP/Oracle environments when needed AI Practitioner You run your own AI-assisted engineering workflow, iterate on it actively, and can assess agent-generated output for genuine engineering judgment — not just volume Full-Stack Leadership You have successfully pushed backend-minded engineers toward full-stack ownership and know what it takes to get them comfortable owning UI Communication Skills You flex your communication style fluently — precise and technical with engineers, sharp and business-focused with stakeholders who think in P&L Soft Skills You build trust with distributed or remote stakeholders across time zones and treat feedback — given or received — as fuel, not friction WHAT WE OFFER A Global Tech Hub in Lisbon Join a thriving international tech community and work alongside engineers, product experts, and business teams who turn ideas into real impact.
